The Spartan king, a husband, a father and the leader of the Spartan army in his later life was Leonidas. The king of Sparta married Gorgo,
who was his niece (Cleomenes’, his half-brother’s, daughter). Gorgo and
Leonidas became parents to one son whom they named Pleistarchos (480-458 BC).
Leonidas died in 480 BC at the Battle of Thermopylae against the Persian
army. His death was seen as a heroic sacrifice. Leoidas was the king of Sparta
from 490 BC and was the commander of the Spartan Army.
